Because we are homebodies, we had a premium cable plan. We got all the channels for a discounted bundle which included our telephone and broadband internet. We decided that we could do without the home phone and just use our cells, and we also downgraded the cable down to the minimum which reduced our monthly bill by $100.00. We are three weeks into this and it's working well. We do have to use extra discipline to limit our minutes during the daytime. I do a lot more text messages now to save minutes. Then on nights and weekends our plan is free.

I've noticed the FedEx and UPS guys no longer let their trucks idle when making deliveries. If I had a chance, i'd ask one of them if it's a new policy, which i'm guessing it is.

It's funny because the other day, we werewatching the news, and they had this special guest come on the show to tell you how to save hundreds of dollars on the simplet things. Hubby and I watched it, and when it was ove, he turned to me and said:"You already do all of that. What else can we do to save?" LOL Apprently, I budget well and know what to do to savev, mostly because I had to learn with us having such a big family. :)

First thing I started doing was clipping coupons- I never did this before and found a local supermarket that triples up to $0.99. The hard part is actually finding coupons for products that we use. I keep all the coupons in my handbag at all times (even coupons for stores like Gap, Children's Place, etc that I always forget at home).
Secondly- menu planning. So much of the fresh foods I purchased would go to waste rotting in the crisper drawer. This really ticked me off- so I sit once a week and pour over my cook books and cooking magazines and come up with a plan.
Third- once a week vegetarian cooking- this exposes my daughter to different foods (she actually LIKES tofu) AND it saves money ($2.50 for 14 ounces)
As for educating the kids- I like the 3 piggie bank rule. While my daughter is only 2.. we are already starting it. One piggie bank for saving for purchases, one for saving long term, and one for charity. At the end of the month, we add a little extra in the long term saving bank as "interest"... this would prompt a good discussion about how banks work, etc.
