I find budgeting and sticking closely to the budget the best approach also. I have written about our experience this year here:

Great post! I like the way the kids' lists kept growing. They sound like me. I tried so hard to be selfless (we have the "no adult" presents thing, too), but then I started whining, "I want a Kindle!". It involuntarily snuck out of me. I couldn't help it.

We didn't get the boys much of anything! I upgraded their phones and they each got a video game. Hey! I had to have money for my Kindle, right?

I've noticed the FedEx and UPS guys no longer let their trucks idle when making deliveries. If I had a chance, i'd ask one of them if it's a new policy, which i'm guessing it is.

I taught Chemistry and General Science at an inner city school for 1 1/2 years before I gave up due to utter exhaustion and depression. My school district didn't provide me with ANY supplies for the first 6 months - I had a box of chalk and one of tacks - everything else I had to provide myself. Half the time the copiers were broken and I had to pay for copies for 160 students out of my own pocket at Staples or Office Max because I was given only about 20 books to share between the entire class. The students refused to bring paper or pencils to class with them, let alone folders or previously done assignments, the principals preached about getting students to pass the NCLB requirements, but no one provided any support that was actually useful for the kids I had to teach. I finally quit, becuase I could get a job working in a lab where I wasn't being cursed out in two or three different languages daily, didn't have to provide a ream of paper per month for worksheets etc., and actually got paid enough money that I could afford to take care of my own daughter! I understand the frustration you feel in being asked to provide school supplies for your children, but recognize that if you don't, the teacher is the one paying for them and we have upwards of 150 students to pay for (depending on the grade!)
